How To Protect Financial Institutions From Ransomware?

Protect financial institutions from ransomwareHow To Protect Financial Institutions From Ransomware?

Cyberattacks like ransomware seem to be getting worse and worse, these days. A recent study from stateofsecurity.com showed that ransomware increased from 39% to 51% just from Q2 to Q3 in 2020. With this growth, ransomware attacks are now believed to be one of the top threat vectors that can intrude on many organizations. One of them is Financial Institutions.

Financial Institutions such as wealth management firms and credit unions are the attractive target for a ransomware attack. Moreover, most of them often find their hands tied and their capabilities lost when their fundamental operations are disrupted.

According to a recent report from Cyber Security Ventures, an organization fell victim to every 14 seconds in 2019, and it’s expected to be every 11 seconds in 2021. Not only that, the ransom amount has increased too, for example, in mid-2018, the average ransomware payment was $41,198. By late-2019, that price more than doubled to $84.166.

Therefore, it is a matter for Financial Institutions to have strategies in protecting their data from ransomware attacks. The three resilient strategies can be an option in avoiding the risk of ransomware attacks. Read them below here:

1. Educate The Financial Institutions About Vulnerable Access to Ransomware

The education aspect related to vulnerable access to ransomware must be taken seriously by Financial Institutions. Whether it is assessing the phishing risk, removing the most frequent attack vectors, or keeping systems and software up to date, these are essential to be taken. If these steps are not taken, ransomware risk is increased.

That’s why IT staff and users must be included in this education perspective since the threat of ransomware can be introduced from both personas. Knowing that Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), phish, and software updates are the three mechanisms for entry, will be a huge help in focusing the scope of where to invest the most effort. So it can be resilient against ransomware from an attack vector perspective.

2. Implementing Backup Solution

Regarding ransomware resiliency, implementing a backup solution is a lot like going through a compliance audit. A product is not necessarily compliant or non-compliant to a standard. Rather, compliance is completely dictated by how the product is implemented and audited. When it comes to a ransomware incident, resiliency is completely based on how the backup solution is implemented, the behavior of threat, and the course of remediation.

As an important part of ransomware resiliency, implementing Veeam Backup Infrastructure can be a critical step. Implementation recommendations for ransomware resiliency include:

  • Protection of the backup server and components
  • Implementing capabilities for ransomware detection
  • Ulta-resilient backup storage and the 3-2-1 Rule
  • Multiple recovery techniques configuration
  • Endpoint protection
  • NAS protection
  • Encryption of backup data
  • Orchestrated recoveries of backups and replicas

 3. Look For a Strong Remediation to Defend Ransomware

Despite all the education and implementation techniques that are employed to be resilient against ransomware. That’s why financial institutions should be prepared to remediate a threat if introduced. At Zettagrid, we have agreed upon the approach to remediating ransomware such as choose to restore data rather than pay the ransom.

Not only that, but the layers of resiliency also have to be prepared to protect Financial Institutions from ransomware incidents. So when a ransomware attack occurs, Financial Institutions can look for strong remediation. Besides that, the organization can also learn where the threat lurks, how to build a resilient IT environment, and how to secure safe restores of its data.

Protect Fintech Data With 5 Functions of Veeam Backup

Protect Fintech With 5 Functions of Veeam Backup

As a pandemic COVID-19 spread to almost all over the world, the demand for digital channels for payment, credit, business, and general cybersecurity, has accelerated. This can’t be said with no reason, of course, but technology has played a key role to grant loans and monitor the financial health of many individuals and SMEs. Therefore, it is not a surprise anymore to see if financial technology (fintech) and credit analytics will be crucial drivers of change in the future.

However, as a massive digital transaction has been made by users, it places Fintech as a vulnerable industry to be attacked by all kinds of cyber threats, including ransomware. It can be said as Fintech has personal or commercial financial and superannuation information. So, if the organization doesn’t have any proper protection or security system, ransomware may infect fintech IT systems as long as there’s a vulnerable gap in its IT system.

Implementing Veeam Backup can be the solution to protect Fintech data. Veeam prides itself on being in the front lines, fighting the good fight against ransomware, and protecting important data kept by the fintech. It offers transparent and actionable strategies on how to educating employees, rotating backup copies across several locations, and leveraging cloud options for making backups practically immutable.

Besides that, Veeam also has five functions that can protect fintech from a ransomware attack. Read those below here:

Protecting backup data from attack

Air-gapped or “immutable” backups offer a powerful technique for being resilient against ransomware and other threats. Enabling a replica of its backup, stored out of reach from cyber attacks, utilizing controls that ensure deletions or changes cannot happen without strict multi-level approvals.

Veeam’s Scale-out Backup Repository (SOBR), partnered with Capacity Tier (also known as Cloud Tier), enables an easy-to-use capability that writes backup data into object storage on any platform that supports it. So, it will protect fintech data.

Detecting ransomware

protect fintech

Detecting ransomware attacks in their initial stages can be difficult. That’s why Veeam provides the ability to closely monitor and protect fintech IT environment and be aware of any suspicious or abnormal activity.

By analyzing CPU usage, datastore write rate and network transmit rate, Veeam can protect fintech by identifying if there are higher than normal amounts of activity on a particular machine. Not only that but when the alarm is triggered, this immediately notifies fintech to inspect the machine, look at the resource counters and determine for the organization whether the activity is normal. If it’s not, this is a good indicator that more steps should be taken to determine if ransomware is the actual cause.

Ensuring ransomware-free backups

Viruses can be undetected and dormant in IT current systems and ready to pounce. If this occurred to the organization, fintech can use the power of Veeam backup and root out ransomware threats before they attack. Not only that, but fintech also can keep ransomware out for good with an automated step to scan the backup for malware.

Restoring guaranteed virus-free workloads

protect fintech

Viruses can be undetected and lay dormant in older backups. Therefore, fintech has to make sure it can protect itself. Secure Restore enables a complete anti-virus scan of its backups when restoring. Having access to the latest virus definitions helps safeguard against previously unknown viruses. That’s why it will protect fintech by providing greater confidence that dormant threats won’t be reintroduced back into the environment.

Testing workloads securely

Unsure of a current workload? Suspect that it may be infected? No worries! Fintech can restore the data into a fully secured and isolated environment to test. By tapping into the power of Veeam to restore data, workloads and applications may into a fully isolated virtual sandbox environment. Test for cyber threats and other issues while performing potential remediation activities – without impacting any production system. So, it will protect fintech data against ransomware.

Why Business Needs Modern Data Protection?

Why Business Needs Modern Data Protection?

The sudden transformation to remote work of the customer experience in 2020 created a growing volume and type of data for organizations. By this case, many business then turned to the cloud to scale up data capacity and agility. Although the cloud had helped enterprises to manage their data flexibly, backup solutions were often not upgraded in parallel by business.

Despite its critical importance, data backup has been one area where business often underestimates it. This tactic can backfire, leaving organizations vulnerable to failures, cybersecurity breaches, also rising data storage and maintenance cost. Therefore, today’s modern data protection like backup strategy is needed to prevent business from the risk of data loss.

Then, what can modern data protection deliver to business?

1. Modern data protection Provide Better Security

Data storage costs are spiraling upwards as well, whether on-premises or related to unplanned cloud capacity growth. While the amount of data generated in 2020 was exceptional, the expansion of data generation has been ongoing for years and is not likely to abate. Systems may not have been built to withstand rapid increases in data or to handle information on the cloud, in muti- or hybrid-cloud, and across different platforms and even formats. Therefore, modern data protection needs to be built by enterprise.

Within the realm of data protection, advanced solutions provide better security, value, and the ability to grow and evolve with an organization. In more sophisticated scenarios, modern backup solutions can even help organizations reach into and leverage stored data to augment the growing tools that require vast amounts of information.

2. Modern data protection takes resiliency to the next level

modern data protection

(Source: ipopba from Getty Images)

While all data needs to be secure, some needs to be more secure: market performance trends used by an investment firm, for example, may not have the same security demands as a client’s account information. Data is also accessed at different times and frequencies. Therefore, modern data protection like Backup or Disaster Recovery is needed to help ensure that the right protection and access are optimally executed from the start.

Modern data protection can also learn how security needs evolve over time, based on changes in, such as usage, policies, or regulation. Imagine the benefits that such a system would have brought to an organization implementing GDPR compliance or ensuring secure, effective data integration as part of an acquisition.

Not only that but modern data protection can also track, identify, record, and analyze issues to suggest event resolution strategies. When combined with real-time monitoring, it can accelerate response time and reduces outages and related downtime.

3. Automate IT environment for update and patch testing

modern data protection

Business should think beyond their data stores as simply a place to run to if and when disaster strikes. Rather than a cellar that contains copies of missing or corrupt information, comprehensive backup stores can be the ingredients of an entirely separate “test kitchen” for DevOps and DevTest teams.

Data backup can automate the environment requirement for update and patch testing and troubleshooting. It can deliver a protected production space where new apps can be run in a sandbox-type scenario. Not only that, but this modern data protection can also be a near-real-time resource for advanced analytics, reducing the need for multiple-data replication across the company.

Survive Disasters With Zettagrid and Veeam

“The only thing harder than planning for an emergency is explaining why you didn’t” – Unknown

In the Information Age, where your business is expected to be up and running 24/7, you need a robust and effective disaster recovery plan. 2016 statistics show that the average workers lose 38 hours every year due to slow internet connectivity and downtime, that’s a full week every year that each employee is unproductive. It is no wonder that some businesses never recover from a serious disaster, multiply that across an entire organisation and the costs start to become unbearable.

It is easy to assume your business’s computing systems will never go down. This assumption cannot be further from the truth. The fact of the matter is that disasters happen! However, instead of focussing on the catastrophe itself and whether it will happen or not, it’s important to concentrate on developing an effective disaster recovery plan.

Disaster Recovery: What, How, Why?

Disaster recovery (DR) aims to protect your company from the after-effects of any event that can hamper or risk the smooth functioning of your business’s daily operations. The cause of organisational downtime can range from a Denial-Of-Service attack or any other cyber attack to hardware or equipment failure or even a natural disaster.

What do you do? How do you implement a cost-effective disaster recovery plan? The reality is, in our fast-paced, online world, if you are unable to transact or conduct your business, your target audience will not wait for the fault to be fixed. They will rush off to your competition. This could end up costing your business hundreds of thousands of dollars in the long run.

The great news is that there are companies in the marketplace such as Zettagrid who utilise Veeam technology to offer comprehensive Disaster Recovery Solutions.

Veeam and Zettagrid: The Perfect Team

In essence, Disaster Recovery utilises cloud computing infrastructure to protect your business applications and data from ceasing to function due to a disaster. The successful DR model consists of two essential components: hardware and software. In the event of a disaster, both of these components work together to ensure a smooth transition from your primary to your secondary system.

This is why you need a well-matched team to keep you covered. With Zettagrid and Veeam working together, you have that full coverage.

Veeam:

First, you are protected by Veeam providing the software side of the Disaster Recovery model. Veeam Replication uses an image-based recovery replication solution. With this setup, your VM maintains constant replication. If your VM should go down, your vital information is ready to access again in mere minutes, with no loss of data.

Zettagrid:

This is paired with the hardware – Zettagrid cloud computing. As the most advanced self-service cloud hosting platform in Indonesia, Zettagrid provides the ideal storage to keep your important data safe.

By using the services of these two complementary companies together, your business enjoys the benefit of having both the powerful technology and the high-quality cloud-based backup services that will ensure your DRaaS solution will work as expected when disaster does strike.

VeeamON 2017 – What we learned and loved!

Luke Brown, Zettagrid’s Technical Specialist, and Evangelist had the pleasure of heading over to New Orleans for VeeamON 2017. As a Veeam Vanguard and vExpert he had some insight into the new products and technologies Veeam are working on.

Take a read to find out what he thought of VeeamON 2017!

Veeam Vanguard’s at VeeamON 2017

VeeamON 2017 in New Orleans has come to a close and I’m back on board at Zettagrid, catching up on the hundreds of emails I missed. This year’s event was unreal, with over 2,000 attendees and a variety of awesome speakers, it was one of the best events I’ve attended so far.

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience from Veeam, not only the event itself but, as I’m lucky to be part of the Vanguard Program I was also given a sneak peek to what the product development teams are working on and some very juicy NDA.

The event was full of insight into the latest innovation and product development that I could bring back to the team at Zettagrid, this is what allows us to be current in our product offering, finding solutions for issues that businesses face every day. We have been using Veeam for many years now having developed three product offerings that utilise and embrace the various components of the Veeam suite.

Another great speaker at VeeamON 2017

What was my favourite part of the event? Veeam put a huge emphasis on service providers and partners, following the announcement of Availability Suite 10. This opportunity is huge for cloud providers like Zettagrid. Our clients want a product that is going to support their business 110% – with this new release, Zettagrid will be able to take business continuity, backup, and disaster recovery to another level. Taking a look, and exploring the new releases that are coming in 2017;

  • Veeam PN – Allowing super easy connectivity between Zettagrid zones or your on-premises remote offices or branches
  • Veeam Agent for Windows – Watch this space, we’re going to kickstart your backup strategy with this release
  • vCloud Director support – Yes finally!!!! Oh, and a little thing called CDP which means no longer relying on snapshots, you’ll be able to get super low RPOs!
  • Backup for Office 365 – Zettagrid were the first in Australia to offer Office 365 ProPlus, this is going to be an awesome product for our clients

The overall event was great, these events are the best way to grow and learn, engaging with like-minded peers that are just as enthusiastic about all things cloud as I am.

I can’t wait to see what’s next…
